The Perth Lynx are chasing unfinished business, and Head Coach Ryan Petrik believes his revamped squad has what it takes to go one better this WNBL season.
After falling short in last season's Grand Final series, the Lynx are preparing for another championship push with a host of new faces and plenty of expectation.
But Petrik knows talent alone won't be enough.
Speaking at the club's season launch, the Lynx coach admitted it had been a hectic off-season, with several key recruits arriving only days before the opening round.
"We've had Georgia for one training session. We've had Teonni Key for two," Petrik said.
"We've had no more than two starters in any kind of scrimmage so far."
Despite the interrupted preparation, there's plenty for Lynx fans to get excited about.
The arrival of Australian WNBA guard Georgia Amoore has given Perth another major weapon, and she's already made quite an impression on her new coach.
"Georgia, obviously, just arrived, but has already thrown the best pass I've seen in my 12 years," Petrik said.
"If it all goes bad, I can just give it to Georgia and let her play, which is a real luxury from a coaching point of view."
Amoore revealed she had been close to pursuing an opportunity in China before a late change of heart brought her to Perth.
The chance to play an exciting, attacking brand of basketball proved too good to pass up.
"I came away from yesterday thoroughly impressed with just the freedom of playing," Amoore said.
Returning Lynx star Alex Ciabattoni shares that confidence, believing the squad has the right mix to challenge again this season.
“I think we have the right pieces to be successful this season,” Ciabattoni said.
First up is a familiar rival in Townsville, a team that has stood in Perth's way in some of the biggest games in recent seasons.
And while there's plenty of motivation heading into the opening-round showdown, Ciabattoni knows the championship won't be decided in one night.
"You don't win championships in round one, so it'll just be a good test"
For Petrik, it's about more than just this season.
He wants to bring a championship to Perth and build the Lynx into one of the biggest clubs in Australian basketball.
After coming so close last season, there's plenty of motivation to go one better.
