Continuing her rise through the ranks after serving as an amateur Development Player last season, Fotu will remain with the Lynx on an amateur contract, so as to maintain her NCAA eligibility.
A WAIS scholarship holder, Fotu has represented WA country teams every year she has put her name forward, and has also played for the Perry Lakes Hawks in NBL1 West for the past two seasons. Despite only turning 18 during last week’s pre-season trip to Kalgoorlie, her maturity, work ethic and infectious energy have made her a favourite among teammates and staff alike.
Fotu also boasts a strong AFL background, having starred for South Fremantle in the WAFLW, represented Western Australia at the National Championships, and been part of the Marsh AFLW Academy.
Basketball runs deep in Fotu’s family. Her parents met playing basketball - her father played professionally and now works for the Perth Wildcats - as does her sister, her brother, and her extended family in New Zealand.
The point guard said she’s excited to take the next step with the Lynx.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the contracted 10 this season,” Fotu said. “The Lynx has been amazing to me, and I’ve learned so much from the team. I’m still balancing basketball and footy, but right now I’m focused on making the most of this chance and continuing to grow as a player.”
Perth Lynx head coach, Ryan Petrik, praised Fotu’s development and character.
“Alira really left a mark on us last season. She’s an outstanding athlete with an electric first step and can seemingly get her feet into the paint at will. She’s loved amongst the playing group, and we’re thrilled to have her step into a bigger role this season.”
Fotu joins Amy Atwell, Alex Ciabattoni, Steph Gorman, Tegan Graham, Anneli Maley, Yemiyah Morris, Kiara Waite and Ally Wilson as players contracted to the Lynx for the 2025-26 season.
